Electrification solutions in underground mines, from electrical infrastructure to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), have gained momentum in recent years as operations in Canada begin to yield the benefits of battery technology. With this in mind, Wesdome’s Kiena Mine in Val-d’Or, Quebec is taking steps towards electrifying their underground operations with the purchase of two Epiroc Minetruck MT42 SG rigs.
These will be the first battery-powered Minetruck MT42 SG machines in Quebec; an important milestone for the mine as they grow their electrified fleet. The Minetruck MT42 SG is Epiroc’s largest battery-electric mine truck, with a 42-tonne capacity and significant ramp hauling capabilities on each charge.
“This acquisition marks an important step forward for our operations. These trucks will not only increase our production capacity by improving the efficiency of underground haulage, but also create better working conditions for our employees, notably through improved air quality and reduced heat in the galleries. They fit in perfectly with our commitment to sustainable mining development. Reducing our carbon footprint, improving our working environment and optimizing our performance is exactly the direction we want to take,” points out Simon Fontaine, Operations Superintendent at the Kiena mine.
“We’ve developed a great relationship with Wesdome’s team at the Kiena Mine and we’re proud to partner with them as they electrify their operations,” said Dawn Nigro, General Manager Epiroc Canada.
“Wesdome’s ability to adapt to advancing technology while maintaining productivity on site has made this transformation possible – it has been a great experience working alongside them to support their objectives.”
