The mining industry in Canada is transforming, especially in recent years, with the rise of new technologies that increase safety and productivity. As this shift in technology occurs, the most successful mining operations are able to remain agile and adapt to the changing landscape.
With advancements in electrification, automation and digitalization, this often means wading into uncharted territory and adjusting mining methods to unlock the value they provide.
For Hudbay’s Lalor Mine in Snow Lake, Manitoba, this approach to mining has allowed them to set the benchmark for the successful implementation of new technologies in their underground operations.
Working together with Epiroc Canada, the Lalor Mine has been utilizing automation for over a decade and has increased both their reliance on the technology and their proficiency during that time.
They also have a mixed fleet of battery and diesel machines and were one of the first to trial Epiroc’s new charger, which fell in line with their goal to achieve an electrified, sustainable underground operation. In Canada, Lalor Mine was the first site to run those same battery electric vehicles autonomously; showcasing their willingness to lead the way while implementing improved technology.
The Lalor Mine team has not only been open to these changes but has helped drive the development of automation features and digital products. Because of their relationship with suppliers like Epiroc, they have been open to trialing new technologies, running tests and ultimately assisting with the formation of custom digital solutions.
One main benefit of successfully implementing automation into their operations is the ability to continue running machines between shifts and during blast clearance. This significantly reduces downtime and allows productivity to continue uninterrupted while keeping operators safe by removing them from danger zones. The digital products also help them manage their data and track performance while providing insights that boost their operational efficiency.
The Lalor Mine team recently renovated their automation room on site, which acts as a control room for the operators who run these autonomous rigs (sometimes operating several at once).
“The relationship we’ve developed with Lalor Mine over the years has really allowed us to see these technologies flourish in the underground environment firsthand,” says Seth Patterson, Business Manager for Epiroc Canada’s Digital Solutions Portfolio.
“The mine has pioneered many of our solutions and it has benefitted both of our organizations; to see them hit their targets and achieve this level of success has been very satisfying”.
As the mining industry continues to welcome advancements in technology, it appears there are no signs of slowing down for Lalor Mine, who have proven they are ready to usher in the next era of underground mining in Canada.
Epiroc aims to continue developing these systems to provide support for mining operations wherever possible.
